Battery Module Identification

There are 2 classifications of Battery Management Systems, distributed or integrated monitoring. An integrated BMS measures all the cell inputs internal to the BMS and require all the cell voltage taps to be routed into the BMS. Here are few examples :

A distributed BMS separates the cell collection from the main BMS hardware using remote sensing boards or BMS satellites over a simple low voltage communications interface. We call these Battery Monitoring Boards or BMB’s. With distributed BMS’s, the cell taps connect only to the BMB’s, limiting all high voltage connections to the BMB’s. The Vintage Voltage BMS is a distributed BMS as are the following :

VVBMS Compatible Modules

The VVBMS can support one of 4 major BMB interfaces. It’s important to know which interface you require before ordering. The VVBMS is normally shipped with only one active interface, since only one can be used at a time. Please contact us if you have a need to swicth between multiple interfaces.

  • Tesla Model S/X
  • Tesla Model 3/Y
  • Tesla Model 3/Y LFP – TI based
  • LTC68xx based Modules including the Mercedes EQS, Thunderstruck Motors BSM or Vintage Voltage BMB

Tesla Model S or X

The Tesla Model S or X is the most commonly reused Tesla battery module. It’s compact form factor and handy 48V configuration make it easy to use.

Model 3 and Y

The Tesla Models 3 and Y are a bit harder to identify. Externally, the packs look the same. Internally, the module electronics can be vastly different. The typical Model 3 module in North America have NCM cells and a BMB on the top of each module. The BMB’s use a Tesla proprietary measurement IC called Batman. Order the base Vintage Voltage Tesla Model 3/Y interface option.

Another M3/MY Tesla Module used primarily in Asia are these LFP based modules. These use a Texas Instruments bq796xx measurement IC that uses a TI specific communications interface. Order the Vintage Voltage Tesla Model 3/Y LFP – TI based interface option.

Iso-SPI based Modules

Modules of this type use a standard Analog Devices Iso-SPI interface. OEM battery modules using this interface include the Mercedes EQS and the Tesla Cybertruck. BMB modules using Iso-SPI include the Vintage Voltage BMB, Thunderstruck BMS Satellite and the AEM BMS Satellite. BMB measurement IC’s are in the LTC68xx family of parts. Order the Vintage Voltage LTC68xx based communications option.
